Georges Mathieu, Tempêtes inconnues
Going up for auction.

Georges Mathieu or the Fury of being - Trailer

I'm not sure what to think here. The whole Art Star posture is ridiculous. I've never talked about selling my paintings in all my years of blogging. Tracy bought one of my paintings the other day (Zaum) and she talks about sales all the time. It just makes me uncomfortable, I guess. I suppose there might be some interesting soul searching about how sales influence studio time. More to come as I prepare for a solo show in October.

Hard to find an easy answer... art/Art has a different meaning for each one of us whether we be painters, connoisseurs, collectors and/or patrons. Lack of sales would severely inhibit my 'need' to paint, I think. However it WOULD open the door to other creative endeavors which might even include... painting!

We should all have such dilemmas.

Sales? What are they?

I've been at a point where the food is going on the charge card. So it was hard to justify paint going on there too. At that point, yes, someone has to bring up the issue of sales. If you don't have to think about it, then I'd say you were very lucky....

First I'd like to say that Tracy does NOT talk about sales all the time. She blogs about her life. Or, at least she has created a blog persona that includes raising a family, and making and selling paintings. When she talks about sales, it seems woven into her daily programing as smoothly as discussing the nature of chicken poop (which she has).

I keep thinking of the music industry and its emphasis on sales and chart ratings. The musicians that I admire have found a way to keep making music well into their 40's without pandering to that system.

I don't consider chart ratings or sales when I buy music. I only reflect upon them when I feel some Platinum selling artist doesn't deserve it. I think, what is wrong with people??

Sales don't make quality is obvious.

We keep making regardless.

Maybe I was thinking more of what blogging has to do with all this. Blogging as a journal, or tiny lessons, or vicarious models.

I don't pay any attention to who is selling or not. In fact, I barely pay attention to the quality of the work when it is all said and done. I pay attention the quality of the blog.

It is the sincerity factor that enchants. (If you can fake that, you've got it made).

I suppose I felt I was being phoney by avoiding the issue of sales. I am not a pure in-it-for-the-ART kind of painter. Well, I might be when I'm in the studio, but that is only a fraction of my life.

I am convinced, however, that the video in this post is outrageous and if I have any agenda, it is to demystify the posture of artist-as-shaman and in-so-doing possibly empower a few more people to make interesting blogs. HAH!

You know I've been waiting for the Georges Mathieu Revival for a long time now - ever since I read about how he used to 'perform' his paintings back in the fifties, for French TV and a live audience, to the accompaniment of orchestras (live!) and in costume!

There was one where he came on in a medieval knight's armor.

The NY School accused him of being an extrovert. Duh! For some reason they assumed sincerity only went with introversion. Later they all killed themselves.

Georges was a gas.

I wasn't going to say this publicly, but I'm going to grow a mustache like Georges.

Thanks for the Life-science links Jacques. I'm going to really dig into them later tonight, and after this pancake massacre that is going on at our house (7 eight year olds over for a birthday sleepover).

You're kiddin' me cap, I didn't know he did the tv performances. I am going to order the dvd that the youtube video advertises. The warpaint on the face just kills me. I wonder if Keasy was aware of this guy?

Mathieu seems to have a little "Magnum PI" thing going there, which is kind of an odd look.

I've always envied painters with their colorful spatterings. A printmaker with ink on his face just looks like he spent the afternoon under his car.
