You know me: If beauty is the promise of happiness, than art is the promise of transcendence. Whether I think that's an empty promise depends on when you ask me.
Wrong phrasing - Where is "painting" taking us is too narrow. Where is "art" taking us is more to the point.
There is a certain queasiness in art circles about subjects such as transcendence, spirituality, religion, etc. My guess: this is temporary - a cultural backlash that can't last forever.
My other guess: there are plenty of artists addressing transcendence and making work intended to change our perceptions of the world around us, thereby changing our selves. But their work is rarely considered in those terms, based on the backlash mentioned in guess #1.
Think Robert Irwin. Think James Turrell. Hell, Roden Crater is filled to the brim with transcendental overtones.
Paik's "Zen for Television" has actually been on my mind a lot lately. Had to rub my eyes when I saw it on your blog this morning. And the art museum in the town where I grew up has a rare Barnett Newman horizontal... chew on that for a while.
Art takes each to a different place- so why ponder it too much. Wastes brain space. Is the dog drawing for sale Mr. La Rose?

Matthew, "filled to the brim" was a funny pun. Your examples, however, feel like another generation. But, you are right. I've "experienced" a Turrell. . . his light and space was Grand Theft Auto to my painting's Pong.
Ms Brazil, I suppose, my religion is mark making. The ritual, theater, and thinking about two dimensions is my brain space. It is awkward when that brain space meets capitalism. I wonder if mark makers should receive tax exempt status like religions? Regardless, I'll send you a private email about what drawings that size are selling for at the galleries (and what discounts blasts from the past receive).

It could be jacques. Over at the blogger help group there are a couple hundred thousand bloggers who aren't laughing. The Blogger people are very tight-lipped at the moment. Poor kids, I wonder how many people actually run this thing? 10? I'd get a lot more done if this thing did implode.

That piece deadline depends on us. The show's dates are October 20-November 15 with opening reception on the Oct. 23rd. If we want a boring piece of paper pinned to the wall, you can email me the text on October 19th, which is interestingly my birthday, but if we want to generate some vinyl letters to apply to the wall, we might need more time. Or if a print on demand catalog is up your ally, we might need two weeks prior to opening. Or, maybe I should see where your contentions come down and whether I support your revolution and whether the paintings plug into that. Maybe you write something small, but we hang one of your paintings way up high in a corner. . .
