I get it. I have been rattling the reference to Rorschach around in my gray matter and recognize that my paintings from 2003 enter into a this category.
I took squares of stone, like the one above called One Finger Over, and rotated them in my hand until an image screamed out. Then, I would rotate it again, just to make sure that I was pulling out the obvious image. The unforced image. The best paintings, in my mind were the ones that I painted the least. Some freak me out still.
What is the value of me dipping into my sub-conscious? I can't really say that there is any, for anyone other than me. In fact, we've had over a century of discussion about this new thing called the sub-conscious and we are not better people because of it. I would see things in the stone. It is an ancient Chinese secret, and a da Vinci device too. It is all documented in Hubert Damisch's A Theory of /Cloud/ TOWARD A HISTORY OF PAINTING which I touched on in a post in December of 2005. But seeing things is different from me doing the leading, as Geoffrey says. With last night's drawings, there was nothing to see. The paper is white. A drip enters the field and meaning blossoms as tendrils extend and capillaries trace out an animation for my mind.
I begin to see some law of nature transpiring that reminds me of how society works. I try to amplify or magnify the law. Often times these drawings are about the meeting of two opposing laws of nature and their resulting harmonic balance.
I think I do come to these drawings with some pretty clear intentions. I'm hoping however, that I can't articulate them for awhile because I'm really enjoying the drawing for now.

SL... hi... me again :)
i just wanted to make sure we were clear that i'm not saying "don't title anything"... ha!
your last three things in this post ... the drop of ink in the pool, the text, and the blue and red image... are perfect examples. In the first you followed something, an idea or a curiosity or an intuitive push... you followed it to find out what it held for you("about the meeting of two opposing laws of nature and their resulting harmonic balance."... awesome.) to and then you have a work from that idea (not OF that idea, that would be illustration). I think your working post title would be great for both the top and last drawings.
another thing i was thinking about... Illustrations point to something. Rorschachs point to whatever we want. But the work I/we are speaking of actually IS the thing. Not an example of, or a picture of an example, but a real embodiment... a creation or real/ization... of that idea (concept) that now exists in the world.
alright, you guys can talk about that, no problem from me, but I want to know why we are not better for someone's having called what has lots of other names and conceptions in all cultures a "subconsious." Doesn't bother me having one and it draws better than I do. oh wait, it's me! now if i could just figure out how to show you...
lol...
Ashes, are you telling me there was nothing original about Freud? Do you mean to say that he just re-combined familiar events?
I mis-typed. no. sloppy thinking. The sub-conscious is where its at. Pshychoanalysis is what seems ineffectual. . . for the masses. I'm sure it has done wonders for some people. However, I have also read studies that some people lead "healthier" lives if they learn to suppress some things, rather than dig them up.
To each his/her own.
Blogging is making me understand how much of a performance art painting really is.
Blogformance.
I need someone to tell me that it is not evil, or irresponsible to be paying attention to my mental state that is subliminal, diminished, or weak and obscure... shouldn't I be doing something "productive"?
Well. . . actually, I'd love to see both of your inner thought drawings (Ashes and geoffrey) our society might need some automatism and synthesis to battle the hysteria.
you guys talk funny.
I'm pretty sure it is because when I grew up, Mercer Island Washington put flouride in their drinking water.
Wait. . . you are right George
MORE DRAWING
LESS TALKING
Or at least, less blogging.
Talking is still pretty cool.
